Sending our children away to school is tough.  There are so many questions that need to be answered.

  • Can they handle college life without the help of mom or dad?
  • Will they have clean clothes?
  • Will they live on pizza alone?

Those are questions only you and your child can answer.  But there is another question that our agents get all the time.  And it’s one we can help you answer.

Should I remove my child from my car insurance policy once they are away at school?

The answer is: probably not.  At first glance it makes sense to remove the child from the policy since they won’t have access to the parent’s cars.  And it would be nice to save a few bucks to help with the tuition payment.  But there is more to this story.

The problem comes in when our kids drive their friend’s car.  It could be a quick trip to the store or, better yet, maybe they are being a good friend by being a designated driver.

In the event that you remove your child from your policy and your newly “uninsured” kid gets in an at fault accident, your policy will not pay out any liability since they are no longer listed as a driver on the policy. This leaves you, the parent who is still financially responsible for your kid, open to have to pay out using your own funds.

Further, many kids come home on holidays or school breaks and will want or need to use your car to get around.

The good news is that many insurance companies offer deep discounts for kids without cars who are more than 100 miles away. Talk to your agent about the details and see what your insurance company offers.
