Let’s say that you need repairs done to your house. You call a local contractor who tells you that he is not licensed, but he can surely save you money and time.

What would you do?

Most people would be adamant against working with someone like this.  So why is it that people encounter this situation every day when buying insurance, yet they choose to do so without the guidance and advice of a licensed agent?

When you go online to buy a policy, do you understand what all the coverages mean? Do you know what is best for your individual situation and exposure? We wanted to find out why “saving 15 minutes” seemed so appealing to consumers.

Myth # 1 – Shopping online will save me time.

The first thing that stood out during our experiment was the huge number of options to choose from. A simple Google search for insurance left me with tens of companies to choose from. As a consumer, I am left to make my own choice on what companies I should be getting quotes from. After visiting many websites and writing down a few quotes, I started to realize that I had spent over an hour on this search, and only had 2 finished quotes.

Myth # 2 – Shopping online is easy

After visiting multiple websites and writing down a few quotes, I noticed that each company has different wording, in some cases even different coverages that the others may not have offered. All of the different definitions and coverages started to become even more confusing as I went further along. As a consumer, you are left to figure this out on your own… or worse, you call an 800 number and speak to Joe, who may or may not know what he is talking about, but when you call him back with more questions, you’ll talk to Susie, and then Meredith and pretty soon, you will talk to 5 different people (like I did) with completely different answers.

Myth # 3 – I can choose my coverages and quote

I take a look at my current policy, and I type in the same coverages on the quote form that I am completing online and it populates a number for me…hmm, this looks good!  This particular company was quoting me about $500 per year less than my current policy, and I put in my policy coverages, so I know that they aren’t taking any coverage away. Right? Wrong! After reviewing their quote in detail, I noticed that they had quoted me their “recommended coverage” which was about $300,000 LESS liability than I had asked for! Is anyone else wondering how they were able to “recommend” coverage to me from a simple online form?

Myth # 4 – The quotes are immediate and accurate

Of course each company asked me if I had any tickets or accidents in the last 3 years… and of course, I can’t remember when that speeding ticket was!  I assume it’s been three years and move on with the quote. Unfortunately this is what I encountered with most companies whom I got quotes from online- they don’t run my driving record until AFTER I purchase the policy… and apparently, that speeding ticket is still on my record.  I thought I was saving $150 a year, but once they email me to tell me my rate has increased due to my ticket; I am right back where I started with no savings, and a whole lot of wasted time.
