Safe
Health Care: A Five-Point Guide
The
key to safe health care is better
communication between you and your
doctor. The five points below will help
you talk more openly with your doctor and help
your doctor give you the care that you need.
-
Ask
questions and voice concerns. It may
help you to write down your questions and
bring them with you to the doctor's
office. Remember to mention all of
your symptoms as well as concerns you may
have about your health.
-
Learn
about your medications. Don't be
afraid to ask your doctor questions about
your medication, including: How much of
the drug should I take and when?
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Are there side effects? Should I
avoid certain foods, beverages or other
medications while I'm taking this?
-
Keep
track of your test results. Medical
testing can uncover some health problems
early, when they're most easily-and
successfully- treated. Ask your
doctor how you will get the test results-
in person, on the phone or in the mail-
and when to expect them. Make sure
you get the results of any test or
procedure, even if they come back
normal. Call your doctor and ask
what the results mean and how they will
affect your care.
-
Talk
with your doctor about hospital
care. If you have more than one
participating hospital to choose from,
talk with your doctor about which one
would offer the most appropriate care for
you based on the procedure that you need.
-
Understand
how to prepare for surgery. Open
communication with your doctor is also the
key to planning for surgery and
recovery. Don't be afraid to:
-
Discuss
your expectations for surgery with
your doctor and ask about the kind of
anesthesia that you will need.
-
Tell
your doctor about any allergies or
other health conditions to help lessen
your risk for complications.
-
Ask
your doctor how long you can expect
your recovery to take and if you will
need any special care or equipment
once you return home.
