Lower
Your Cholesterol in 2004
High
blood cholesterol is a key risk factor for
heart disease. Try these tips to help
keep your cholesterol at a healthy level.
Cut
the Fat. Eat fish and skinless poultry. If
you eat red meat, pick lean cuts, trim the fat
and eat just one serving (the size of a deck
of cards).
Broil,
bake, poach or steam food when possible.
If you use oil, cook with just a little.
Choose one that is low in saturated fat.
Try olive, corn or canola oil, or a cooking
spray.
Eat
Low-Fat or Nonfat Dairy Foods. Eat no more than three or four egg yolks a
week and limit your intake of liver and
high-cholesterol shellfish, such as shrimp.
Choose
Foods Wisely. Grains, legumes (beans), vegetables and
fruits provide complex carbohydrates and fiber
and contain no cholesterol and little
saturated fat. Whole-grain breads and
cereals, beans, carrots, beets, strawberries,
oranges and grapefruit are high in fiber and
have no cholesterol.
Get
Fit.
Exercise for at least 30 minutes on most
days. Regular aerobic exercise lowers
"bad" cholesterol and raises
"good" cholesterol. It can
also help reduce yoru weight, which ccan help
you lower your total cholesterol level.
Exercise also conditions your heart and lungs
and helps control high blood pressure.
If you're over age 40 or have any health
problems, call your doctor before starting an
exercise program.
