Here are two helpful checklists to prevent losses to your home.

How to Prevent a Fire or Water Loss in Your Home

Water Prevention Checklist

Items to Inspect What to Look For Date Inspected
Icemakers and refrigerators Look at water lines for leaks. Crimped lines behind refrig.  
Water filters Look for water leakage around tanks and connections  
Plumbing supply lines Installation of lines according to label or manual. Cracks or splitting of hoses or water marks.  
Washing machine hoses and clothes washers Proper maintenance if cut-off valve is not filling properly. Coupling assembly attached to the hose is not splitting. Hose has no cracks, splits or is not crimped behind washer. Buy a Reinforced hose.  
Roofs Replace damaged shingles and look for loose shingles  
Shingles and vents Loose or damaged shingles to replace. Vents are attached properly to prevent leakage.  
Chimney systems Flashing is sealed and no cracks in brick  
Siding Look for deteriation caused by rot, mold, or insects  
Water heaters Exterior seams, drip pan, and water connections show no sign of leakage  
Toilets and sink hoses Look at hoses for cracks on toilets and sinks. Toilets should be maintained if failing to flush properly or returning to proper water levels.  
Proper caulking of showers and tubs Repair cracks in tile, check shower pan for mold, look for buckling of walls.  
Water softener Check connection lines  
     

Fire Prevention Checklist

Items to Inspect What to Look For Date Inspected
Lawnmowers Leakage of gas/oil. Muffler maintained  
Vehicles Fuel system not leaking  
Power tools Cords are not cut or damaged. Plug-ins are in good shape.  
Furnaces Clean filter regularly. Combustion chamber not rusted  
Water heaters No dripping of water onto heating element and wiring from an air-conditioning unit. Thermostat looked at if water temperature not proper  
Small kitchen appliances Cords in good shape  
Cleaning products Safety used in mixing of chemicals and storing of chemicals  
Candles Do not leave unattended. Safe location while in use  
Fireplaces Chimney sweep periodically  
Smoke detectors Batteries working properly  
Washer and dryer Lint removed. Flammable items not in dryer while in use.  
Lamps - Halogen lamps Protective wire top. Be aware of items around lamp while in use.
