Inspection
Can Prevent Household Breakdowns
Even though homes do
not require as much maintenance to keep
problems from occurring as some machines like
autos and computers, a periodic home
inspection can prevent numerous home
breakdowns.
According to SAFECO
Insurance, homeowners should take the time to
look at systems throughout the house.
First, hoses can be a
source of damaging leaks. Check hoses attached
to washing machines, air conditioners and
dryers. While some hoses can leak or burst, a
clogged dryer hose can cause a fire.
Secondly, furnace
hoses need to be cleaned annually to avoid
damage to the heating system. In addition,
inspect the water heater for signs of drips
that may indicate it could leak. Also, strap
the water heater to the wall to prevent damage
in an earthquake.
Regarding the
electrical system, if a circuit breaker trips
frequently, have it inspected by an
electrician.
If you have a sump
pump, check it at least twice a year. Also, if
you burn wood, have your chimney inspected and
cleaned once a year. Other heating system
exhausts should also be checked yearly to
prevent carbon monoxide from backing up into
your house.
Finally, one of the
easiest ways to prevent damage is to keep
downspouts and gutters cleared of leaves and
debris. Overflowing gutter can leak into
walls, ceiling and floors.
Taking the time to
inspect your home and make necessary
preventative repairs can keep it trouble free
and prevent costly disaster.
